01/06/2012 ¦ News The first European Breakfast Day took place on 24 April 2012 to mark the launch of the “Make Time for Breakfast” pledge With non-communicable diseases on the rise, and many Europeans skipping breakfast, the “Breakfast is Best” campaign (www.breakfastisbest.eu) is calling on stakeholders across Europe to address the importance of breakfast in healthy lifestyle choices and combating health inequalities, and support to the “Make Time for Breakfast” pledge. Judith Liddell, Secretary General of The European Federation of the Associations of Dietitians (EFAD) points out “that is a worrying trend that we need to address as a society. A good breakfast forms an essential part of a healthy and balanced diet.” Together, our objective is to ensure that by 2020 all EU countries stress the importance of eating breakfast in their nutrition policies, and monitor breakfast consumption as a key health indicator. European Breakfast Day was celebrated with the interactive “Ask the Experts” event led by four key “Breakfast is Best” campaign member representatives. This dynamic format saw the experts move from table to table, presenting the issues, providing insight into the science behind the benefits of breakfast and answering participants’ questions. Dr. Roberto Bertollini, WHO Europe, Kristy Lundström, Scandinavian School of Brussels, Halli Kristinsson, LazyTown also spoke at the event.
