Today, CEEREAL, the European association representing breakfast cereals, together with FRUCOM, the federation for dried fruit, nuts, processed fishery products and related sectors, host a joint high-level conference in Brussels. Under the theme “Sustainable, nutritious and safe: FRUCOM and CEEREAL products’ contribution to EU citizens’ diets and food systems”, the event brings together policymakers, EU officials, industry leaders and scientists to discuss the future of food safety, nutrition, and sustainability in Europe.

Opening speakers include CEEREAL President Ece Nevra Göncü and FRUCOM President Olivier Hottlet, followed by a keynote address from Gijs Schilthuis, Director at DG AGRI.
The programme includes three dedicated panels:
- Food Safety: Updates from the European Commission and EFSA on contaminants and additives, and the implications for EU food safety policy.
- Nutrition & Communication: Presenting scientific insights on the role of breakfast cereals in people’s diets and portion size guidance for dried fruit and nuts
- Sustainability: Perspectives from policymakers, farmers and businesses on implementing EU environmental and sustainability policies, including regenerative agriculture and sustainable sourcing.
Speaking ahead of the event, CEEREAL President Ece Nevra Göncü said: “The journey towards sustainability and nutrition requires a multistakeholder approach, where industry, government, and civil society work together to create impactful solutions for a healthier future. As breakfast cereal manufacturers and oat millers, we are deeply committed to promoting sustainable and healthier diets across Europe. Our products not only provide essential nutrients but also play a vital role in fostering sustainable food systems. By collaborating with FRUCOM and engaging with policymakers, we aim to set high standards as we continue to address the evolving needs of EU citizens, ensuring that our products meet their expectations for quality, safety, nutrition, sustainability and taste.”
Olivier Hottlet added: “FRUCOM strongly supports open, inclusive, and rules-based trade. We work closely with our European members and international industry partners to seek lasting and sustainable solutions to the unprecedented challenges faced by the sectors we represent. Now, more than ever, do we recognise the strong partnerships and deep institutional relationships that FRUCOM has built. The sectors of dried fruit and nuts, processed fruit, vegetables and seafood have demonstrated their commitments and ambitions in terms of sustainable production and trade, going beyond legal obligations and making significant investments to ensure that European consumers have access to high-quality and nutritious long shelf-life products”
The event underlines the organisations’ objective to support evidence-based dialogue with EU institutions and stakeholders, and to demonstrate the positive role of their members’ products in healthy and sustainable diets.
